A Good Fundraiser
« on: November 25, 2008, 01:30:52 PM »
So, we tried a fundraiser that worked great.  We had the idea to have a dinner auction.  We went to several families in the church and asked them if they would be willing to donate a dinner to our youth ministry (they decided the number of place settings).  We had around 12 families that helped us and encouraged them to use "themes" if possible.  We made the announcement about 3 weeks before the auction date.  The way we reeled the congregation in was to provide a free lunch to all who attended.  We provided a sandwich bar, chips, fruit and a drink that did not cost us very much to put together.
We had the students make paddles that were numbered, had a friend who was an autioneer come in and the bidding began!  Now, you have to have one "sacrificial" dinner to go first so we used our spaghetti dinner.  Those plates went for 6 dollars each.  Once our people started getting into it, they could not stop bidding!  Our most expensive dinner went for 86 dollars a plate!  The high bidder had the opportunity to purchase as many plates as they wanted and the rest were offered for the same price.  We sold every plate available and made over 3000 dollars in less than 30 minutes!

Some of the themes that came up were, murder mystery, BBQ pool party, Luau, boating/water sports lunch, Harley BBQ...etc.

One important thing to remember is to have a description of the dinners.  The more exciting you can make it, the more people will want to bid.  Also, the families that are hosting the dinner need to get in contact with the people who purchased the dinners.  Our youth ministry took care of that.  This allows the host family to set a date for the dinner.

One thing that happened that we didn't plan, was that it brought people together that might not have gotten together otherwise and allowed them to build some really awesome freindships.

It worked great for us, it might work for you too.
